Skin studio basics

Classic and Slim models, the base and outer layer, 3D, 2D and split view, body parts and saved skins.

The skin studio at /skin edits Minecraft Java player skins: a 64 × 64 pixel texture wrapped around the player model.

Models: Classic and Slim

A skin is made for one of two body models. Classic has 4-pixel-wide arms, Slim has 3-pixel-wide arms. Switch the model under Body parts and layers (the layers button in the dock). Importing a player name picks the right model automatically.

Base and outer layer

Every body part has two layers:

  • Base – the body itself. Base pixels are always opaque.
  • Outer – a second shell slightly larger than the base, for hats, jackets, sleeves and hair. Outer pixels may be transparent.

Under Body parts and layers, the pencil button next to a layer chooses which layer you paint on, and the eye button shows or hides it in the preview. You can paint the base underneath visible clothing; hidden layers stay editable.

Views

The view switch beside the skin's name offers three views of the same skin, mask and history:

  • 3D – the character. Drag beside the model to rotate (or use Rotate), scroll or pinch to zoom.
  • 2D – the flat 64 × 64 texture (the UV atlas). Every pixel of both layers is editable here, even where the 3D view hides it.
  • Split – both side by side (stacked on phones). Hovering one pane highlights the same pixel in the other.

Pose (stand or walk), the walking animation, a pixel grid on hover and face labels in 2D are set in Menu → Settings.

Body parts

Body parts and layers shows your skin as a small clickable figure. Click a part (head, body, an arm or leg) to work on it alone; click it again, press Esc or clear the selection to return to all parts. Left and right always mean the character's own left and right, not the viewer's.

Your skins

Every skin has its own private workspace with its pixels, marks, requests and history. The switcher next to the skin's name lists and searches your skins, and the strip on the left shows your recent ones; click the name to rename it. New skin next to the name (or Menu → New skin) starts a fresh one, the chevron beside it (or Menu → Import skin) brings in a PNG or a player's current skin (see Import, export and renderings). Skins save automatically; the status next to the name shows Saving… and Saved.

Each tab keeps its own skin: a reload brings the same skin back. A new tab (the genMC logo opened with a middle click, for example) opens your last skin – or starts a new Untitled skin if that skin is already open in another tab. So two tabs, and the agents paired with them, never edit the same skin by accident. To continue a skin in the new tab, pick it with the arrow next to the name.
