Connect an agent
Pair Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex or another MCP client with your studio tab using a short code – step by step, with troubleshooting.
The short version
- Open the studio you want to work in (skins at
/skin, builds at/build). - Look at the agent column on the right. While no agent is connected it shows a pairing code like
K7Q-4MX. If the column is closed, choose Agent; if the code is hidden, choose Connect agent (the link icon) in the column's header. - Choose Copy code and prompt and paste it into your agent's chat.
- The agent calls
genmc_pairwith the code. The agent column now shows "Claude is connected" (or the name of your agent).
The code is valid for 10 minutes and works once. New code creates another one.
The first time: add genMC to your agent
The agent needs genMC's MCP server once. Its address is shown in the panel under First time? Add genMC to your agent – it is this site's address followed by /api/mcp.
| Agent | How to add genMC |
|---|---|
| Claude (web, desktop) | Add a custom connector with the MCP server URL (Settings → Connectors). |
| ChatGPT | Add genMC as a connector / MCP server with the same URL in ChatGPT's settings. |
| Claude Code (CLI and desktop app) | Run claude mcp add --scope user --transport http genmc https://<this site>/api/mcp – the panel shows the exact line to copy. Without --scope user genMC only works in the folder where you ran the command. |
| Codex CLI | Run codex mcp add genmc --url https://<this site>/api/mcp. |
| Cursor and other MCP clients | Add an MCP server of type Streamable HTTP with the same URL. |
| Codex app | No setup: open the studio in the app's built-in browser. Its site tools connect without a code. |
Menu names in the agent apps change from time to time; look for "connectors", "MCP servers" or "tools".
You can also skip this step: the copied prompt asks the agent to install genMC itself. Agents that can run commands (Claude Code, Codex CLI) do so right away – your app may ask you to approve the command once. A newly added server only loads in a new session, so for the current chat the agent talks to genMC over plain HTTP – that works, but needs more steps per action. From the next session on it uses the genMC tools directly.
While connected
- The agent works in exactly this tab. Keep the tab open; you can switch to other tabs or apps meanwhile.
- One agent per tab. Pairing another agent with a new code replaces the first. To let two agents work in parallel, open another tab: it gets its own skin or build.
- Several connections of the same agent. An agent may reach the tab from more than one MCP session at once – for example its chat and a helper script – by resuming with its
resumeKeyin each. They share the tab; a new code pairing replaces all of them. - A reload keeps the connection. A duplicated tab does not take it over; it shows its own code.
- If the tab closes or the device sleeps, the agent's calls wait up to 30 seconds for the tab to come back, then fail with a clear message.
Reconnecting without a new code
Pairing returns a resumeKey to the agent. If its connection drops – the agent app restarted, the server restarted – the agent calls genmc_pair with that key and is back in the same tab without asking you. Resuming from a second session adds it next to the first instead of cutting it off. The key stops working when you choose Disconnect or pair a different agent.
Disconnect
Choose Connect agent in the agent column again: Disconnect ends the agent's access to this tab; Reconnect with a new code starts over.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
The agent says it has no genmc_pair tool | genMC is not added as an MCP server yet, or the connection failed when the agent started (for example because the site was not reachable). Add or reconnect the server in the agent app, then start a new chat or session. |
| "This code is unknown or expired" | Codes last 10 minutes and work once. Choose New code. |
| "Too many wrong pairing codes" | Wait 10 minutes; wrong codes are limited per network to prevent guessing. Codes that work and reconnecting with a resumeKey don't count. |
| The agent can't see the tools after pairing | Some apps don't refresh their tool list. The agent can use genmc_status and genmc_call instead. |
| The agent works in the wrong tab | Each tab has its own code. Pair again from the tab you want. |
| Requests stay Queued | The agent is not listening. See Requests, marks and Finish. |
